Comparing The Glass Menagerie and the Life of Tennessee...

Parallels in The Glass Menagerie and the Life of Tennessee Willliams In Tennessee Williamss drama The Glass Menagerie the setting and dramatization in the play are used to convey each member of the familys hopes, desperations, and fears. He uses symbols throughout the story to add a deeper meaning and give his characters a sense of mystery. Also, though maybe inadvertently, The Glass Menagerie actually parallels the people and events in Tennessee Willliamss life. The setting in this drama plays a major role in the storys symbolism. It is set in a small apartment ,The apartment faces an alley and is entered by a fire escape, a structure whose name is a touch of accidental poetic truth, for all of these huge buildings†¦show more content†¦I would have stopped, but I was pursued by something.... I pass the lighted window of a shop where perfume is sold. The window is filled with pieces of colored glass, tiny transparent bottles in delicate colors, like bits of a shattered rainbow. Then all at once my sister touches my shoulder. I turn around and look into her eyes. Oh, Laura, Laura, I tried to leave you behind me, but I am more faithful than I intended to be! (Haley) Amanda uses the fire escape as another venue to protect her children. She says, If anyone breaks a leg on those fire escape steps, the land lord ought to be sued for every cent he possesses. The fire escape plays into Williamss impossibility of true escape. Also, a very large photograph of Mr. Wingfield is placed in a very prominent position in the living room. The enlarged photograph of Mr. Wingfield that hangs smiling in the living room is a reminder to Tom that escape is possible. The photograph seems to mock Tom; he got away and left his son to fill his shoes as the breadwinner and protector of the house; all Tom really wants to do is find adventure and write poetry. (Phillips) The photograph is a constant reminder to the entire family that they have been deserted, a reminder that they werent good enough. Death - 1167 Words

Death’s (the narrator) fascination with the colors of the sky functions as imagery. It helps set the mood of the story. Death’s eagerness to observe different colors indicates his indecision about whether the human race is good or evil. In his analysis, human beings are capable of being either good or bad. Death merges these colors into the Nazi flag; a black swastika in a white circle surrounded by a field of red. Zusak compares the sky with soup when Himmel Street gets destroyed by bombs. The Gravedigger’s Handbook is the first book Liesel steals. For Liesel, the book represents great loss, sorrow and her feelings of abandonment because of her brother’s death and her mother’s abandonment. The irony in Himmel (Heaven)†¦show more content†¦The â€Å"giant blue eye† is a just God. The complete Duden Dictionary and Thesaurus is a gift to Liesel from Ilsa Hermann. It marks a phase in their friendship. In addition, the dictionary is a tool to pursue her calling as a word shaker. This passage suggests that humans desire understanding more than food. The Jews never thought it would come to this. Everything changes when the parade of Jews come through Molching. Hans offers one of the Jews a piece of bread and is whipped by Nazi guards. Hans is afraid the Nazis will search his house and find Max. The house is never searched but Hans is drafted into the German army. The irony in this is that Alex Steiner didn’t want to send Rudy to the school because it was dangerous. However, if he did, he probably would have saved his life. In Max’s story, Hitler grows a forest of propaganda-bearing trees but a young girl plants an indestructible tree from a seed of friendship. She stays at the top until her friend meets her there. When they climb down, the tree falls, smashing Hitler’s forest. Although most people returned to his forest, others quietly followed the two friends. Despite the violence against Jews in Nazi Germany, there were a number of Germans who disagreed with Nazism. Max’s story aims to encourage Liesel to be willing to counter words of hatred with words of love. My Fall Semester Project free essay sample

Most of the documents we chose were ones that we have already learned about in previous history classes. For example, some of the documents were acts passed during this time like the Stamp Act. We knew the effect that each individual act had on the colonists which helped our decision making progress. Some of the other documents that we used we found on some good American history document websites. These websites had hundreds of documents that had to do with the British and the colonists affairs during the American Revolution which gave my group plenty to choose from.Even though there were hundreds to choose from, only some had to do with the question and subject we were working with so that arrowed them down quite a bit. After finding the first 15 documents, we narrowed down the list to 10, taking out the least important ones. Some of the 15 documents were obviously less important than others which made it a lot easier to narrow down. The second group was the big events group which had all of the major events that the British did when controlling the colonists like the Boston Tea Party or the Boston Massacre. The final group was the map, charts, etc. Group which had the charts or maps showing the restrictions that colonists had from the British.Once we had all of the documents together with a source for each and all organized together, the project was basically done and just needed a student to write a document based question essay for our project. After someone did that in class, my group read over their essay and was very impressed on how that student Interpreted those documents with the question that we made. We thought that the groups that this student used made a lot more sense and more specific than the ones we originally thought of.The groups that this student thought of were actions of the British, Increased taxes, and British violence on the colonists. After reading these groups and reading the essay of the student, we realized that the groups we made were quite vague and not very specific compared to ones the student used. This student also provided additional documents that we loud use on this subject which we thought were well thought of and were great ideas.Even though the student that wrote the essay for our project had different ideas of the grouping, that student basically had the same main ideas that we had the British were controlling the colonists. Both of us also had the same ideas of which documents were more important to the question than others were. I thought that this fall project was a lot more interesting than previous history classs group projects because instead of answering a question for the project, you get to create the question instead.
